Confronting Rising Inequality in Asia: Asian Development Outlook 2012 Luncheon

Description: The US-Asia Institute hosted a timely discussion on the economic challenges facing Asia, including growing inequality and the implications for strategic concerns of the United States. Dr. Changyong Rhee, Asian Development Bank's Chief Economist, and the former Secretary-General and Sherpa of the Presidential Committee for the 2010 G-20 Seoul Summit, unveiled the 2012 Asian Development Outlook, which analyzes macroeconomic issues in developing Asia, with growth projections by country and region, including China and India.

Leadership in Transition: Korea

Description: The USAI and local experts examined recent leadership transitions taking place on the Korean Peninsula with the succession of power to Kim Jong Un in North Korea and his efforts to consolidate power, as well as the results of South Korea’s recent legislative elections on April 11, 2012. With these changes, in combination with presidential elections looming at the end of the year for both South Korea and the US, the changing dynamics of these transitions will greatly affect political, economic, and strategic stability in the Asia region.
