Seventh National Leadership Conference
The conference kicked off with a two-day session at the US Department of State focusing on “Toward the Year 2000: Evolving Strategic Realities for International Cooperation.” A special core group of leaders from the US, Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines participated in the two day conference in Washington, DC, and then traveled to Williamsburg, Virginia and New York City for off-the-record seminars. The group traveled to Beijing, Manila, and Tokyo to join others from those countries in conference sessions and briefings related to the topic area.

Philippine Leaders Exchange Program
This program, coordinated by the US-Asia Institute, brought eight young leaders from the Philippines to the U.S. for a five week program to study the American system of government and social issues.

Luncheon Briefing held at the Capitol with Ambassador Abdul Rachman Ramly of Indonesia, focusing on the East Timor issue.
Briefing session for key business leaders in Washington, D.C. on U.S.-Asia relations. Presentation focused on economic development in Asia, trade issues and the importance of dialogue. Speakers included five top congressional aides and high officials from various Asian embassies.
1995
29th and 30th Congressional Staff Delegation to China
The delegation held discussions with Liu Deyu, Deputy Secretary-General of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, focusing on trade and investment between the United States and China. Delegates also visited ports and economic development zones in the South of China – constructed specifically to attract new foreign investment. In addition to visiting Beijing, the delegates were also hosted in Nanning (seat of the Guanxi provincial government,) Beihai, and Hong Kong. Later on in 1995 the 30th delegation visited aircraft manufacturing plants in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. They also toured a state-of-the-art nuclear power plant in Guangzhou Province.
1996
31st, 32nd, 33rd, and 34th Congressional Staff Delegations to China
The 31st Congressional staff delegation to the PRC began with meetings in Beijing with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC), the Chinese people’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, and the Boeing Corporation (China). The delegation went on to visit industrial developments in Kunshan, Suzhou, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. In Shanghai they visited the Pudong Special Economic Zone, as well as the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Other delegations to China in 1996 held talks with representatives from Boeing China, Ford China, and McDonnell Douglas. The 34th delegation also visited Sichuan, China’s agricultural heartland, where tours of farms and agribusiness concerns were specially arranged.
5th and 6th Congressional Staff Delegations to Singapore
The 5th Congressional staff delegation participated in the 1996 US-Singapore Dialogue Program, organized by the Singapore International Foundation. The Program focuses on trade, economic and foreign policy. Meetings with top government and business officials comprised a large part of the delegation’s focus in Singapore. Additionally, the delegation toured industrial sites in Singapore and nearby Indonesia.
5th Congressional Staff Delegation to Japan
In early 1996 a delegation from the United States traveled to Japan and met with representatives from business and government agencies. The delegation met with members of the academic community.

35th, 36th, 37th, and 38th Congressional Staff Delegations to China
In addition to visiting with joint venture firms in Beijing and Shenzhen, delegations in 1997 visited Yunnan Province in Southwest China.
1998
39th, 40th, and 41th Congressional Staff Delegation to China
The delegation held meetings with government and business representatives in Beijing and Shanghai, the three delegations in 1998 journeyed out west to Chengdu (Sichuan Province) where they visited the Chengdu Aircraft Company’s factory as well as the world famous Chengdu Giant Panda breeding base. Delegates attended meetings with Chinese Foreign Ministry and CPIFA officials in Beijing, and toured the Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation’s headquarters in Harbin.

42nd, 43rd, and 44th Congressional Staff Delegations to China
In 1999, three delegations to China visited Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, Zhuhai, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. The 43rd delegation in spring of 1999 also visited the far western areas of Xinjiang Autonomous Region. The delegation toured well-known Silk Road sites, carpet factories, ancient ruins, and Kashgar weekend bazaar.

US-Asia Institute Seminar
This seminar was coordinated to examine the Clinton-Obuchi Summit and its effects on U.S.-Japan relations. Panelists included Dr. Dick Nanto, Congressional Research Service; Dan Bon of Senator Roth’s office; and a fellow from the Brookings Institution.
