The panel will feature, Tami Overby, Vice Chair of the US-Asia Institute, Shihoko Goto, Director of the Indo-Pacific Program at the Wilson Center, Andreyka Natalegawa, Associate Fellow in the Southeast Asia Program at CSIS, and Sean Stein, President of the US-China Business Council. Briefing to be followed by a networking reception for staffers and diplomats. Light refreshments and drinks will be provided.

Panelists representing the Republican and Democratic perspectives in Congress will offer insights into priorities of the 119th Congress and how they might impact the Indo-Pacific. This briefing will discuss South Korea’s upcoming APEC host year and what to expect from the meetings. The event will also touch on how the domestic political climate in South Korea might impact the APEC proceedings in the new year. Featuring Ms Sarah Ahn, Economic Minister at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and Ms Tami Overby, Vice Chair of the US-Asia Institute.

This program, designed for foreign diplomats covered elections in all positions from the Presidency to local county officials. Mr Jon Gregory, Senior Vice President at Yorktown Solutions, and Mr Jeremy Haldeman, Deputy Executive Director of the Community Sponsorship Hub will offer an overview of the American electoral process as well as insights on key aspects of the elections in Virginia this year. Following the briefings, participants will visit a Virginia polling site to observe voting processes and speak with local elected officials.

The US-Asia Institute bids farewell to Minister of Congressional Affairs, Tomoaki Ishigaki, of the Embassy of Japan and extends our heartfelt appreciation to Minister Ishigaki for everything he has done to help strengthen our Japan programs during his time in Washington.
The US-Asia Institute hosted its 7th cohort of the Mongolia IMPACT Emerging Leaders Program. Young community leaders from Mongolia participated in a week of leadership and democracy focused training and spoke to a variety of experts in public service and private industry in the US.
We often hear about the relationship between the US and China in a diplomatic or strategic setting, but less often discussed is how US-China relationships affect the world of academia and the exchange of ideas. This briefing will provide a brief background and focus on relevant legislation. Our panel will offer perspectives on the geopolitics of deep-sea mining, international collaboration, and environmental, social and techno-economic considerations in policy making.

This summer, USAI hosted its 14th annual China 101 Congressional Briefing Series. The series included seven briefings featuring 16 expert speakers from think tanks, universities, government agencies, the private sector, and more. These briefings were attended by nearly 300 individual congressional staff members, and more than 50 of these staff were granted professional development certificates for attending four or more sessions.

USAI hosted one session of the India 101 Congressional Briefing Series this spring, offering Congressional staff the opportunity to hear from experts with direct experience and expertise on U.S. policy toward India and Indian domestic actions.
This briefing, entitled “Historical Overview of US-India Relations, Economic Prospects, and India’s Growing Tech Sector,” featured Dr. Irfan Nooruddin Professor of Indian Politics at Georgetown University, and Javade Chaudhri, Of Counsel at Jones Day.
This event was tailored for current Hill Staffers, featuring guest speakers who shared insights into their experiences on the Hill, their transition beyond it, and their career trajectory and personal growth. Designed to assist current staffers in contemplating their career trajectories, it offered valuable perspectives and guidance for professional development and advancement.
USAI welcomed a delegation of Deputies from the Chinese National People’s Congress at a luncheon roundtable, one of the first of such exchanges to be held since the Covid-19 pandemic. Leaders, professionals, and scholars interested in US-China relations came together for this opportunity to connect, engage, and foster understanding between the people and governments of the United States and China.
USAI offered two back-to-back briefings as part of this year’s Korea 101 series for congressional staff. Korea 101 provides unique insight into the US-Korea relationship, featuring speakers with firsthand knowledge of the region. This program seeks to provide expert analysis for those working on or personally interested in issues concerning the Korean Peninsula and US-Korea relations.

USAI hosted this first installment of its “Japan 2024” Roundtable Series. This session, entitled “US-Japan Economic and Trade Relations,” allowed congressional staff to connect with Shihoko Goto, Director of the Wilson Center’s Indo-Pacific Program, Tomoko Hosaka Mullaney, Executive Director of the U.S.-Japan Business Council, and diplomatic staff members from the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C.
USAI hosted an intimate luncheon discussion for congressional staff with Hitoshi Tanaka, former Deputy Foreign Minister of Japan and key advisor to Prime Minister Koizumi who is currently one of Japan’s leading public intellectuals regarding foreign policy. Mr. Tanaka was joined by Dr. Mike Mochizuki, Japan-U.S. Relations Chair at the George Washington University, in order to foster a candid and open discussion with congressional staff and to exchange views on policy discourse in both Asia and the U.S.
This virtual discussion was held soon after Indonesia’s 2024 presidential election, giving our panel of regional experts a chance to speak on the importance and implications of these recent political developments.
USAI kicked off our 45th anniversary year with our annual Lunar New Year Celebration. Honored guests from the Biden administration, the U.S. Congress, and the diplomatic community delivered remarks while attendees enjoyed the cuisines of various Asian countries. The event also featured taiko drum and lion dance performances.

As the first in-person event hosted by USAI in 2024, 2024 Outlook for Asia and Congress provided members of the diplomatic community and congressional staff with opportunities to connect with experts on the US Congress and US-Asia relations. The event included two briefing sessions, “US Congress Forecast for Asia” and “Asia Today Briefing for Congress,” followed by a reception.
Taiwan’s highly anticipated presidential and legislative elections are just days away, giving voters the chance to indirectly voice their opinions on issues such as policy towards China, domestic economic challenges, and more. This virtual discussion will be held less than one week after the election, allowing our panel of regional experts to provide their fresh analyses of the currently unknown election results.
This event featured discussion of the outcomes of the US 2023 APEC host year, takeaways from the recent Leaders’ Week in San Francisco, and outlook for APEC in 2024 as Peru takes on the role of host economy. Remarks by Ambassador Matt Murray, US Senior Official for APEC, were followed by a networking reception with guests from Congress, the private sector, and the diplomatic community.
