On March 3, 2020 or "Super Tuesday," over 20 diplomats from Asian nations joined the US-Asia Institute to learn more about the US election process and see democracy in action.
The first part of the program took diplomats to Alexandria, VA, where they visited a local voting site at George Washington Middle School and met with Bruce Brown, Chairman of Alexandria's Electoral Board. During this visit, diplomats saw firsthand how the voting process works and learned about the role that state and local parties play in the electoral process. They also had the chance to learn more about early voting and election security.
The second part of this Super Tuesday programming brought diplomats to USAI's headquarters on Capitol Hill for an Election Results Watch Party. In addition to watching voting results live, Jeremy Haldeman, Director of Government Affairs and Advocacy at Alight and USAI Congressional Circle Member, gave a presentation on the primary race thus far, the outlook for Super Tuesday, central issues to look out for throughout the race, and further details about the electoral process including the role of state delegates, the National Party Conventions, and a look ahead at the next states to vote. During this program, diplomats were able to engage with the election and see how recent storylines in the race unfolded in real time.
We would like to thank the Alexandria Electoral Board for hosting our group, Jeremy Haldeman for providing expert analysis on the election and Super Tuesday results in real time, and to the diplomats who have stayed extremely informed on the US election and electoral process.
