In the fifth session titled, "Conflict in the South China Sea: Southeast Asian Perspectives on Maritime Security Challenges," experts in U.S.-Southeast Asia relations and security affairs provided a broad overview of the current state of the defense partnerships and alliances between the U.S. and this diverse region. This conversation aimed to provide information on how the U.S. can work with the region and its specific nations to understand these security challenges in the South China Sea and how the U.S. can adapt to emerging threats given the perspectives and desires of the nations of Southeast Asia in the defense realm.
