We would like to express our sincerest thanks to the US-Asia Institute for providing for our father the opportunity to continue following his passion for fostering international engagement and understanding. He took special pleasure in mentoring students and interns and watched with great pride as they embarked on new opportunities. His annual summer BBQs for interns as well as trips to China and Singapore with congressional staff delegations were true highlights for Dad in his later years.
Most importantly, we wish to thank Mary Sue Bissell, for whom Dad had the greatest fondness and admiration. Whenever he mentioned Mary Sue to us, it was never without the use of superlatives: amazing, extraordinary, fantastic, hard-working, dedicated. We couldn’t agree more.
In looking through some of Dad’s files, we found some notes he had written for remarks he was to give to new Program Assistants:
I am delighted to volunteer at the US-Asia Institute. Its goal for better understanding between and among nations is top-notch. To me, it’ss an Institute with a heart, more like a family outfit than an organization. I’ll bet that when your tour here is up you will agree with me!
Dad’s “tour” here on Earth may be up, but the legacy he leaves behind was enriched by his wonderful experiences and friendships with the USAI family.
With deepest gratitude,
Linda Jordan Sjerven, Michael Jordan and David Jordan
