Northeast Asia in Focus - 1: Understanding Northeast Asia in 2022

The first session of USAI’s Northeast Asia in Focus series featured three experts in U.S.-Northeast Asia relations. Robert Daly, Director of the Kissinger Institute on China and the US at The Wilson Center, and Yuki Tatsumi, Senior Fellow and Co-Director of the East Asia Program and Director of the Japan Program at the Stimson Center, had a conversation moderated by fellow panelist Tami Overby, Senior Director of McLarty Associates, regarding the current state and future trajectory of economic affairs and strategic competition within the diverse region of Northeast Asia. Mr. Daly began his remark by the new state of US-China relationship, as well as the tension in military and geopolitical sectors. Ms. Tatsumi discussed Japan's key role in the international society since the Post War Period and the challenges it faces in the future in the context of evolving US-China relations. Ms. Overby put down her insights on possible developments in US-Korea coalition in defense and trade. Participants also contributed greatly by providing insightful questions, where all the speakers discussed the strategic competition in Northeast Asia, Indo-Pacific, and Russia, and US's capacity and ability to participate in regional security and trade efforts, including QUAD, BRI, TPP, and CPTPP.
