2021 US-Asia Institute-Szymanski Rule of Law Program for American Law Students

For the second year in a row, the American Rule of Law program took place entirely online. While the American fellows were regrettably unable to visit China on the program, a welcome silver lining was that the online format gave them much wider access to scholars, officials, lawyers, and other experts throughout greater China and the Pacific region. A representative sample of their over 25 meetings during the 2 week program are presented below.

Due to the pandemic, the 2021 Chinese fellows were sadly unable to travel to Washington, DC. However, the online program format did provide them the opportunity to meet with lawyers, elected representatives, judges, government officials, and other experts throughout well more than 1/5th of the United States. A small sample of their nearly 60 meetings over the 4 week program are presented below.

The American Rule of Law program, originally scheduled to take place in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong in May, was rescheduled to August and then moved online for its two week duration.

The students met with public and private sector actors in the Chinese legal and political system. They used Zoom, VooV, and WeChat for all of their communications.

Due to the covid-19 global pandemic, for the first time ever, the USAI-Szymanski Rule of Law Program for Chinese Law Students was conducted entirely online over Zoom, Webex, Thinkific, and WeChat.

For another first, the 2020 program concluded with a moot court debate between the Chinese law students over whether American rule of law is “virtuous or vicious”. Edited footage of the moot court debate can be found at the link below.
