The US-Asia Institute and the National Committee on North Korea prepare for our first briefing on North Korea. Due to a tense relationship between the U.S. and China, efforts to push North Korea towards denuclearization have fallen through. As a result, North Korea has launched a record number of missiles reportedly capable of striking the U.S. mainland. Along with this, key Northeast Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, China and Russia must also navigate their relationships in order to deter North Korea’s advances. This briefing will offer Congressional staffers with insight into the North Korea-China relationship, expand the aperture on the North Korea issue to analyze how increasing militarization of East Asia impacts the prospects for denuclearization, and the dynamics on the Korean peninsula as a result of the upcoming ROK election. Join us as we gain valuable knowledge and perspectives relating to North Korea and the future of their missile program.
